Cost of the Afghanistan war per soldier

Jim Lacey of the Marine Corps War College recently pointed out that Gen Petraeus believes there are around 100 al-Qaida members fighting in Afghanistan. On the flip side, there are more than 140,000 coalition soldiers there. That means there are 1,400 soldiers for every al-Qaida fighter. It is estimated that it costs one million dollars a year for each US soldier. That means it costs around $1.5 billion a year for each al-Qaida member. Jim Lacey asks the pertinent question, "Has anyone done the math?"

In what bizarro world does this make sense to anyone?

  1. great perspective. maybe we should just give each al-Quaida member $1.4 Billion/year to go away. Or $1.4 Million, and save loads of money.

    thanks,
